First appearing on Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1990, Slam Dunk is one of the best selling mangas in history. Written and Illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, the series, alongside the NBA and MJ, had a heavy hand in popularizing basketball in Japan and greater Asia in the 90s. For the latest rendition of the Air Jordan 6, Nike pays tribute to the 31-volume masterpiece.
Certainly one of the most popular legacy models from Nike's vault, the AJ6 is also the sneaker of choice for Hanamichi Sakuragi (before they fall apart on him), the protagonist of Slam Dunk. A hot-tempered misfit in the earlier parts of the story, Sakuragi develops into a top prospect noted for raw athleticism and passion for the game as the story progresses. The upper of the predominantly red shoe illustrates the key moments of this transformation, and also worth mentioning is the presence of the number 10, the number that Sakuragi sports on his back in the manga.
